Power Instinct 2000. by shouryuuken on August 7, 2008
Does anybody out there remember the old fighting game from the early nineties Power Instinct? Power Instinct was released during the height of the fighting game craze, and just like many of the games of the era, faded into obscurity. This was no surprise, because it wasn't memorable. The mechanics were terrible and it was clear the game was made just to take advantage of the popularity of the genre. The developers definitely created this game as sattire on fighting games. The cast of characters were stereotypical and contained players such as Keith Wayne, a rip off of Axel from Streets of Rage, Reiji Oyama, the Ken/Ryu martial artist rip off, and a ninja named Saizo Hattori. The characters are largely forgettable from a technical stand point, but the game has a charming sense of humor. Well, at the turn of the century, SNK had been doing work with a talented group of developers named Noise Factory who were responsible for the excellent 2D hack and slash Sengoku 3, as well as the Double Dragon inspired Rage of the Dragons (co-developed with Evoga) to name a few. In addition to updating Double Dragon and Sengoku, they turned their attention to Atlus' Power Instinct. Matrimelee is definitely a solid, entertaining fighter. If you're looking for a technical masterpiece on the level of Mark of the Wolves or Street Fighter III: Third Strike, keep looking. But if you want a light hearted fighter that also remains to be enjoyable, you're in luck. The quality of animation is top notch, and the characters are more interesting under the new coat of paint provided by Noise Factory. Fighting games dont have to have the highest level of technicality to be good. What makes a good fighting game is a good sense of satisfaction when attacks are landed while watching the action, whether youre behind the controls or not. Although you wont see this game taking the main stage at a fighting game tournament, it meets the requirements of a good fighter. I give it a 4 out of 5.
