Two game and movie genres were really popular in the 80s. Cops and robots. Combine the two and of course most people will immediately think of Robocop. Sega, however decided to create their own cybernetic crime fighter with E-Swat.
The game is an on-foot side scrolling beat 'em up. You'll be shooting most of the enemies, though. At first your character is just a regular police officer, but as you take down the top criminals and gain ranks, you'll be promoted to the highest rank and get the special E-Swat armored suit!
This special armor will definitely make quick work of most enemies due to upgraded weapons and the ability to take more hits. It won't always be easy, though since you'll often be surrounded and will have to choose your moves wisely in order to take out a group smoothly. Aside from the machine gun arm, there is a surprise energy shot that actually comes out the back of the armored suit, mowing down any unfortunate criminals that happen to be in your path.
E-Swat is definitely one of my favorite Sega arcade games that has a great soundtrack, graphics, and futuristic, sci-fi setting. If any of those things interest you, definitely look into playing this game.
