Great, but forgotten game by koutesu on November 22, 2008

When X-MEN Children of the Atom appeared, Capcom dazzled fighting fans with it's gorgeous animation and graphics with the then new CPS II board. This game is a follow up to X-MEN and really improved on the fighting engine.
While X-MEN allowed the player to attack in mid air, block in mid air, even create a chain combo in mid air, Marvel Super Heroes really improved the engine with the launcher technique (a punch or kick that sends the opponent, aka launch the opponent, into the air). The launcher attack became a staple in the versus games and even into other titles like Rival Schools.
The sprite animation is top notch, even with big and bulky Hulk and Juggernaut. The animation is fluid, smooth, and remains up to speed with the action. The game has a lot of colors like most Capcom games and the comic books.
The character designs look awesome. They really capture the feel of the comic books while using a more manga or anime style of design.
The backgrounds change like in X-MEN with the fall apart bridge in Wolverine's stage and the constant movement of Spiderman and Psylocke's respective stages. The music is original and the matching victory screen music is reminiscent of the Darkstalker characters having their unique victory music.
The special effects are splashier this time and are still screen filling (like Iron Man's Proton Cannon).
The most unique feature of this game comes from the story arc in which it's loosely based. The heroes and villains fight for the ability to use the Infinity Gems that temporarily increase power, speeds up time, etc. No other Capcom fighting game uses this feature. The real challenge comes when faced against the game's villain, Thanos, who takes the gems and holds them in his gauntlet with the Mind Gem.
This game is a classic worth checking out if you're a fan of Marvel Comics, Capcom, and 2D fighters.
