I never got to play Megaman for real when I was a kid. I saw a friend of mine playing MegamanII and beating the last boss so I could see the ending of the game. This ending got stuck in my head, I remember it until this day although not clearly, also with time I forgot or did not knew that it actually belonged to Megaman 2. Megaman is one of this things in life that is really special in a way that is hard to describe. When I play it it sort of gives life to another world around me and inside of me, seeing things with different eyes, feeling different. Perhaps especially Megaman has this power because it is linked to my childhood but I can´t tell it for sure. What I can say for sure is by describing how I feel about it.
Many years later I got the opportunity to play the original Megaman games on Emulator and I enjoyed every moment of it. I made it a special time for me to play on weekends, beating 1-6 of the NES Megamans.
Megaman 1 got to be my favourite Megaman of all time.
It offers so many thrilling things. The style that it is drawn is a perfect NES style of the 80´s. Although the NES was very limited in its graphics/sound capability, Megaman always shone with very nice graphics, extremely cool drawn characters and one of the most memorable music scores of gaming history. How I would describe it: it is a mix of cool/sentimental/cute and it sounds like japanese robots thought it up and it fits the graphics perfectly, the graphics being the same way. Playing it the graphics makes you feel like you are on a far away NES planet in a different dimension with its own rules. It literally sucks you inside.
The gameplay in Megaman 1 is simple: you have to jump, run and shoot, sounds pretty simple but it takes much skill and memory to complete all stages and reach the endboss because the difficulty is set really, really high. But it is a big fun to learn to master these very basic three things and tell the enemies on the screen who is boss. What any gamedeveloper can learn from this game is that things don´t have to be complex/massive to be difficult/challenging and rewarding. There is also a core fun aspect of the game: eleminating a boss gives you his special power. This special power you can use against all enemies but it is best used against a boss who it will affect the most.
Megaman 1 has somehow the most cool memorable retro music out of all Megaman titles for me personally, I love Megaman 2 too, years after watching my friend beat the game I discovered that the ending I spoke of in the beginning belonged to it and it is my second favourite Megaman game, but the first title won my heart completely. Music/graphics/bosses and its highest difficulty of any Megaman game make it a great title, all in all it feels so very much Megaman and beating it for the first time in 1 session gave me a very rewarding experience that I won´t forget.
