Sega was ahead of it's time in the thrid generation way back in 1985 when Space Harrier first hit the arcades. The SMS port followed in 1987 and obviously wasn't comparable to the arcade version, but for being on an 8 bit system you have to give this game alot of credit. The game's layout is setup to give the illusion of a 3D environment with 2D sprites with the best 8 bit graphics you'll see on the SMS. You are the Space Harrier and you are equiped with a huge blaster gun and a sweet jet pack. You can fly all over the screen and run on the ground as the game constantly thrusts you forward hurling many enemies and obstacles that you can blast out of the way (for the most part lol). At the end of each level you take on a boss that is big and menacing, one being a double headed bone dragon!!! There are plenty of levels to keep you busy and you also get kick-ass bonus stages where you get to ride this Falkor like dragon and raise some hell. Let's also not forget about the amazing music Space Harrier provides, it's great adrenaline pumping tunes that gets you in the mood to kick some serious ass. Now this game is not perfect. This game can be quite difficult with one hit kills and all but at least there is a continue code that can keep you going for a good run. It also does suffer from some flicker when too many sprites are on the screen and the gameplay would probably be only subpar standards but overall this did not ruin my Harrier experience, it's still a great game that makes a great edition for you SMS collection.
