Great RPG by smerritt89 on July 4, 2009

A great start to the Shining Force Series, one of my favorite series. This game is different from those that followed. A great maze system like many of the old RPG's and a classic fighting system. This game is similar to the original Phantasy Star, and has a timeless quality.
A spiffy adventure for those old-school RPGer\'s by dwsspcburch on May 9, 2009

As a sort of \"spin-off\" of the Shining Force Series, Shining in the Darkness takes many characteristics of it\'s parent series and implements them into a turn-based, first-person labyrinth style game. With three characters, and each one with their own specialties, you explore a massive dungeon with several different \"levels\" to explore, each one full of monsters, traps, and treasure. With captivating music, perky (and oftentimes hilarious) graphics, and a story that stays straight-forward with a few nice twists, you are bound to love it.

Granted that it is an older game with graphics not meeting up to today\'s standard, you don\'t see many people playing this game, but for those hardcore, oldschool gamers that love nostalgia, i say take this one home. 8/10

An awesome classic! by falonian on April 9, 2009

This is a great game; and incredibly unique. If you like mazes, you'll love this game! I've had the game for years, but I still haven't beaten it yet... it's basically a huge labryinth, where the bad guy has stashed the princess. There are plenty of surprises to find, cool weapons, armor, etc to get, and a decent story to follow. Enjoy! :)

Shining force, shining in the darkness, and Shining force 2 are three of my favorite rpgs ever. I like the fighting style in the game where it is tacticle. It has a very good story line and does not boor you out while you are playing it. It is quite challenging and it will take you some time to beat it. There are lost of secrets that you can find. I give it a 5/5 and suggest it to anyone who enjoys RPGs
The birth of a gold star RPG by Worca on January 7, 2009

Shining in the Darkness. One of the first games i ever brought and im proud i did. Back when Nintendo had a nice grip on RPG's with the Final Fantasy games, Sega needed something big to even crack the market and thus this game was born and im glad it was. It follows the story of ...YOU. The son of a great knight who has been called by the king to find his daugther, the princess. His advisors are all thinking its a bad idea though Sir Tristan stands up for you and you are given the task.

This was a dungeon crawler type RPG. 3D and you never saw yourself and the monsters really were detailed for there time. It was a lot like the game Might And Magic. The game really was hard as it gave hints only once and if you didn't read the directions or you got lost, you paid the price and geting out was hard enough. The biggest thing was this game gave birth to the Shining Force games so if you want to know where it all started, THIS is where to go.

Unlike the later Shining Force 1 and 2 games, this predecessor came with a 1st-person view. All of the game's action takes place on 3 maps, the City (where you can buy weapons/armor/items, rest at the inn, talk to NPCs, and save your game (though if using a ROM, save state makes that unnecessary), the Castle (where a single room holds a changing cast of royalty to talk to), and of course, the Labyrinth.

The large chunk of your time will be spent roaming through the dark (albeit occasionally lit by torchlight) walls and halls of the Labyrinth, fighting monsters and looking for treasure. Originally you are on your own, but later on 2 friends will join you on your quest (you may find even more characters will be available for your party later, if only for a limited time).

Though the game is a simplistic dungeon-crawler, it has a charming plot and challenging game play (especially if you don't make paper maps or use someone else's off the internet - the levels are huge and will challenge your memory). While the game play and plot aren't nearly as advanced as the later Shining Force games, it is a great game to play and though the twists and turns are few, you may find yourself surprised.

The Original Shining game by koga 777 on October 8, 2008
yes this is indeed the shining game that started it all.Set apart from nearly every other shining game (besides shining and the holy ark)this is a superb dungeon-crawler that immerses you into the game.you play a young knight son of the great mortred.Your original objective being to rescue the princess(the classic damsel in distress)however you uncover a plot that dark-sol plans to release the darkness inside the very labryinth where the princess is being kept!and so your mission goes beyond just a simple rescue mission it's a mission to save all you love!fantastic story combined with addictive gameplay make this classic truly deserving of it's title of the original shining game
Very good game by kejd on August 28, 2008
Shining in the Darkness (Shining and the Darkness in Japan) is a 1991 RPG for the Mega Drive/Genesis video game console. It was one of the first RPGs released for the system, and began the Shining RPG series that would span four Sega video game consoles as well as the Game Boy Advance and PlayStation 2.

Shining in the Darkness was a "dungeon-crawler" RPG. The game put the player in control of the main character as he and two friends (Pyra and Milo) explored 3-dimensionally rendered dungeon mazes in search of the "Arms of Light". The villain of the game, Dark Sol (called Mephisto in the Japanese version), is the son of the villain of the same name in the Shining Force game which appeared in 1992.

Shining in the Darkness is a fantasy video game, set in the kingdom of Thornwood. The king's daughter and the father of the main character have vanished, while the evil sorcerer Dark Sol has appeared to threaten the kingdom. The main character is charged to find the Arms of Light, rescue the princess and his father, and stop Dark Sol.

The game consists of story line interaction, dungeon exploration, random monster fights, and predetermined 'boss' fights. The combat in this game operates similarly to certain RPG games of the same era (e.g. Dragon Quest). Monster encounters happen randomly during dungeon exploration at which point turn-based combat proceeds.

ONe of the great Rpg;s on Megadrive. by bigbessa on August 18, 2008
To all fans of the shinning force series, this is the game that started it all. The first roleplaying game on the Genesis and one of the best. Great story, solid graphics and a decent musical score. Although it is not a strategy typr Rpg like the shining force games this is still definetly worth a look. Still one of my favourite games of all time.
