Though the game has a pretty cookie-cutter story, "Oh no, something evil is threatening the land... Worry not world, we, the rag-tag army of children and assorted talents shall combine to defeat all that threaten..." However the game-play and the way the characters interact are so incredibly memorable. The combat is very engrossing for a strategy-RPG of its time. The grid system was pretty easy to get used to and the combat units included: mages with the greatest ways to nuke multiple enemies, knights with the option of hitting hard the adjacent unit or throwing a spear two units away, archers requiring specific positions in order to hit, and various healers and melee units. A lot of thought went into each fight and into leveling up all the members. The main force has a very nice backstory, though you end up adding people to the force well into the later chapters of the game.
This, Shining Force 2, and Phantasy Star 4 are three of the must-plays for all Genesis owners.
