2nd greatest rpg for sega ever by sdh81 on April 21, 2009
Rating: 8/10
the shining force series is right up there with the FF's. the graphics and animations arent great, but they dont take away from the gameplay. it is more of a tactical game, so for tose that fell in love with FF Tactics, you will love Shining force and its sequels

Great game. A lot of fun for those that love strategy, leveling characters, and finding secrets. The graphics are simple as are the animations. This does not take away from the game. I would recommend anyone to start playing this game. Early on you would realize if it is your type of game since the battles become more complex but have the same methodology.

The absolute greatest RPG series back in the days. This and Phantasy Star 4 were the cause of my childhood inactivity and awful attention span in school.

Though the game has a pretty cookie-cutter story, "Oh no, something evil is threatening the land... Worry not world, we, the rag-tag army of children and assorted talents shall combine to defeat all that threaten..." However the game-play and the way the characters interact are so incredibly memorable. The combat is very engrossing for a strategy-RPG of its time. The grid system was pretty easy to get used to and the combat units included: mages with the greatest ways to nuke multiple enemies, knights with the option of hitting hard the adjacent unit or throwing a spear two units away, archers requiring specific positions in order to hit, and various healers and melee units. A lot of thought went into each fight and into leveling up all the members. The main force has a very nice backstory, though you end up adding people to the force well into the later chapters of the game.

This, Shining Force 2, and Phantasy Star 4 are three of the must-plays for all Genesis owners.

Definitly one of the best rpg ever made. The fighting mechanics and levelling of characters makes the player bond with the characters and makes you spend hours of fun trying to level up. the story line is also nice and made me want to play all other shining games around. Its a real gem n even new games with much better graphics never gave me the fun i had with this game. thumbs up
The good old days by 7718 on February 13, 2009

I can remember the first day a friend of mine brought this game over to my house like it was yesterday. I had never played an rpg before, and thought the graphics were shoddy even back when Genesis and Super Nintendo were the standard, but let me tell you, I have only enjoyed maybe 2 or 3 rpgs as much as I had playing this one. Who knew that from that day on I would forever compare the rpg genre to this game. Shinning force is what's known more today as a tactical rpg, where you are able to strategically move about your characters in battle on a mapped grid. Different characters result in different movement capabilities, much like chess pieces. I've always found this much more entertaining then simply stumbling into constant battles one after another. Many popular games such as Disgaea have taken this approach, but almost none come with a story that drives me to continue playing. Call me old fashioned, but I like imagining my characters voices, I enjoy the ability to get lost, and I love a good old battle that I can lose.
one of the best stratrgy rpgs ever by wiznew21 on January 21, 2009
Shining force and Shining force 2 are two of my favorite rpgs ever. I like the fighting style in the game where it is tacticle. It has a very good story line and does not boor you out while you are playing it. It is quite challenging and it will take you some time to beat it. There are lost of secrets that you can find. I give it a 5/5 and suggest it to anyone who enjoys RPGs
Still a Classic by shiningguy on December 29, 2008

I have loved the Shining Series since I first received my Sega Genesis when I was 5 or 6 years old. 14 years later, Shining Force and Shining Force 2 still have the best replay value of any game on the market. These RPGs formed my belief structure in terms of what can be considered a "good" game and what can be considered an "excellent" game and these are definately excellent games. These are a must play for anyone who considers themselves a fan of RPG style games.
Great introduction to the Srpg realm by Knightblade on December 19, 2008

I was a Fan of Phantasy Star 2 and after beating it numerous times I was looking for other titles just as enjoyable. I came across this title and it had a different twist to it but not an unwelcome one. This new brand of battle sequences and character controllability would be the spark that ignited all kinds of new strategy rpgs using a similar concept.

This was the 2nd game that i played on gensis, many years ago. The most appealing thing about the game to me was the promotion system. You level your allies, which at times can be tremendously tedious. And then just about the time you are saying, these guys look kinda simple, booom! you have level 10 and you are ready for a promotion, i advise getting level 20 with your allies before promoting, you end up with much stronger allies. A+ on this game, higher if that were possible.
