Excellence in Essence by YiKwang on February 9, 2012

This is one of those games that I don't think was appreciated enough. It has it's complications and annoyances, but so do all games. As far as the difficulty of the gameplay itself goes, I believe the level of challenge that rises too high is a hard point to reach. In english, I deeply miss the pure hardcore nature of games long lost.

I think this is a classic piece of media, a purely fascinating premise, intriguing abilities and gameplay patterns and a story which, while not everyone's cup of tea, was consistent in it's style so much so that the events become believable and the world becomes almost familiar after enough interaction with the inflections of the characters and the nature of the environment.

Bad as it may be in seemingly so many peoples eyes, I think this is a game every avid gamer should strive to see through to the end. Plus, I dig the artistic vibe, man- to borrow a phrase from... basically every guitarist between '62 and '78.

Solid 8, if only for its uniqueness, but I personally am tempted to amp up tp a low 9.

Good strong believably unbelievable story, at times the difficulty ramps up if you don't know the "trick" for that area. Overall I gave it a 7 due to its inherent flaws, that somehow made me play through it a second time to see if I could locate that magical developer brain that made the game instantly easier.

Sound beyond Reproach, although its kind of depressing that its not more varied considering the diversity of locations and themes you cross through the comic book world.

Visuals don't hurt for their time, preloaded-frames before actions give the combat a less choppy feel even while sporadically button mashing. You can actually see the character draw back before a kick in the opposite direction, etc.

Game was short, pure and simple. Story though believable in a "monsters under the bed" sort of way, but left more to be desired. Bonus points for a Rat sidekick with Pikachu powers, who tears the page up to find you secret items.

All in all, one for the collections of the world as an example of a good idea that didn't go far enough.

Pretty bad. Does not stand the test of time. by infophone411 on September 18, 2009

In 'Comix Zone' you take control of comic book artist who gets sucked into his own comic.

Graphics- 4/5

The game animates nicely. The art is also superb. Overall a little to dimly lit for my taste.

Sound- 2/5

Horrible soundtrack is overshadowed by even worse sound effects.

Gameplay- 2/5

The game isn't that fun.

Overall 5/10

Mediocre. This game makes me depressed.

Great game.... Incredibly difficult. by Diddley Boobody on June 16, 2009

I love the mechanics and creative thinking put into this game. The action is fast, the colors are vibrant, and the story is unique. However, the game is really, really hard. I love a challenge but not to the point that I get frustrated. (It's not easy for a game to frustrate me)

The Best Genesis Game Ever by jconv on February 23, 2009

This game is absolutely, in my opinion, the best genesis game ever made. It is like a fighter where you are in a comic book and you kill all of these different drawings. So this is like an action-fighter ish game that makes a neat comic book interactive!

Having gone through phases of wanting to play the games i used to play when i was younger, this undoubtably tops the stack. This game was well thought out with an interesting story line. A must for side scroll lovers. However this isn't just the average side scroller, it has a clever little twist in the sense that you become trapped in a comic book, fighting the bad guys that you once created in your very own comic, and you skip through the levels as if you were actually on a comic book page! great game and if you have never played it i highly recommend giving it a go. A*!

I haven't played this one in years, but I remember it well enough. It's WEIRD. You play a comic book artist sucked into an alternate comic-book dimension, and get some typical comic-book superpowers along the way. The game does a good job of making you feel like you're in a comic book, and to give you an idea of how that works, the game's levels have page borders so it looks like you're in the comic book, and when reaching the end of a level, he jumps over the page or turns it somehow.

I tend to rate games like this and Streets of Rage lower, simply because I'm more into RPGs than action side-scrollers, but for those whose cup of tea that is, you'll probably find this exactly what you've been looking for. The game is challenging without being impossible, has an interesting soundtrack, and also has a good combat system.
